Souru stood in line for what seemed like hours. It was December twenty-fourth, and with only hours left till Christmas, he decided now was a good time to go Christmas shopping. He had bought everybody's Christmas present and was waiting in line to get the last present he needed - it was for his girlfriend, Jaina. They had met a few months ago back when Souru was working in a nearby cantina and Jaina was his customer. They had hit it off at first laying eyes on each other. Souru got to the display case, and the man behind the counter noticed him and said, "Hello ma'am, how can I help you?"
"Sorry, I'm not a woman."
"With that kind of hair I'd swear you were-"
"Thats okay - a lot of people do that. I was wondering how much that one is there?" Souru said as he pointed to what he was looking for.
"Ah, yes, that one. That is around one thousand credits," the man replied.
"One... one thousand credits..." Souru nearly passed out. "Thats my next five paychecks, but it's for Jaina, so I'll take it."
"Excellent choice, sir. Would you like anything inscribed in it?" the man asked.
Souru thought it over and told him. "To Jaina, I will always love you, Souru."
"Alright. This Jaina seems like a very lucky lady - is this what I think it is?"
"Yep."
"I see. Well, good luck."
Souru handed the man one thousand credits and took the package and placed it in one of his shopping bags. "She is going to love this..."
Souru had just finished putting the last touches on the tree when he heard a knock at his door.
"Just a minute!" Souru yelled towards to door as he checked to make sure everything was okay. And it was - even his gift to Jaina, which sat behind the tree in a box about three feet high. He opened the door and greeted Jaina with a kiss on the check.
"Howdy."
"Hello. Holy cow! Look at this place - it's beautiful!" Jaina said as she admired the decorations around the room.
"Took all day, and the food's almost done."
"Need any help with it?"
"No, I'll be okay."
Several minutes passed before Souru said that dinner was ready. He had set up a candlelight dinner for the two of them; the lights were low, and the glow of the Christmas lights and other candles around the room helped make it look peaceful and romantic.
"May I?" Souru asked, pulling out a chair for Jaina.
"Thank you," replied Jaina as she sat. Souru then took his seat, and they started the meal. About an hour later, they had finished and got all the dishes cleaned and put away. They were now in the living room lying on the couch. Souru had his arms around her as they looked out at the falling snow though the giant living room window.
"Want to open gifts now?" Souru said, a little eager to give Jaina the present he got for her.
"Alright," Jaina replied as Souru jumped off the couch and onto the floor so he could hand Jaina the box with her present in it. He handed the box to her and waited for her to open it. She started to rip the wrapping paper off the box to find a normal brown box. She opened the brown box to find some tissue paper on the top of another wrapped box. She pulled out the smaller box and unwrapped it. It was the same for three more boxes, until she got to this small box. She opened it waiting to see what was inside. There was nothing in it.
"Umm... Souru, there's nothing in here," Jaina told him.
"There's not? Damn... I thought I put it in there. Be right back - I'll go look for it," he replied as he got up. First he went into the kitchen. Nothing. He checked upstairs. Nothing. As he was walking back towards the tree, he tripped over one of the other boxes the Jaina has unwrapped. Jaina rushed over to him to help him up.
"Are you okay?!"
"Yeah, just give me a sec."
As Souru tried to get up, he was only able to get one knee up and fumbled for something in his pocket. He pulled it out and opened it. It was an engagement ring. "Jaina...... will you marry me?" he asked, hoping she would say yes. Jaina was speechless. Then she finally gave her answer.
"Yes... I'll marry you."
They both started to laugh, then hugged each other.
"This is the best Christmas ever," Jaina said. Then they kissed.
It was the best Christmas ever.
