Background of a Star-eyed Senshi

By Chirudo Sutaru/Sailor Corellia

Back and forth. Back and forth. Watching him pace made not-quite one-year-old Darien dizzy. Then again, this huge world usually made Darien dizzy. But today was different. Today, Darien's mother was in the hospital. Today his baby sister was going to be born. Darien knew he was going to have a sister, because his mother, Jaina, told him so. Darien's father, Souru, was a nervous wreck, pacing back and forth in front of the infirmary doors. Darien sat contentedly on his soft blue blanket. His twin brother Morgan was already asleep, cuddled up in a big chair, wrapped in a dark red blanket. His fuzzy blue-green hair was in total disarray, as it usually was. Souru's was, too, but his was usually neat and tidy. But at one o'clock Corellia Standard, anyone's hair would be messed up. Three-year-old Lucas, with his long blue hair in a thick braid down his back, sat in another chair playing with a data-pad. Trowa, at two, stood by a window, staring out at the dark Corellia sky. Darien stuck his thumb in his mouth as he started to fall asleep. Souru came over and picked Darien up, wrapping the blanket around the toddler's little body. Darien rested his head on his father's shoulder, and soon his breath slowed to the rhythmic pace of sleep.

Four hours. She knew she'd been in the room for four hours. Jaina's face was red, and the doctor, nurse, and 2-1B droid hovered around her, checking vitals, making sure everything was positive. Souru would have been with Jaina, but with Darien and Morgan being only eleven months old, and Lucas and Trowa being three and two, it was impossible. Jaina's body tensed with a contraction, sweat beading on her forehead. Jaina did her best to keep hold of the Force. She was weak and her mind reeling with pain, but she didn't want her daughter to panic. Through the Force, she projected an image of herself - and her new family - and pleasant thoughts. Jaina relaxed as the contraction subsided. Just a little longer, she thought, and my new baby girl will be with me. The doctor dabbed a cool, damp cloth on Jaina's forehead.

Jaina took the short relax to strengthen her bond with the Force. She needed all the help she could get, the pain was so overwhelming.

Her body then lurched with yet another contraction, this one making her cry out a little. The doctor moved to the business end of the table, Jaina noticed. Then, suddenly, it was over. The pain was gone. Jaina sighed, released her tension and pushed some golden brown hair from her face. A few minutes later, the nurse came to Jaina with a towel-wrapped bundle in her arms. Jaina smiled lovingly as the nurse lay Jaina's daughter in her arms. The nurse then went to the infirmary door and gestured to Souru, who waited outside.

Souru sighed with relief when he saw the nurse. He sat the still-sleeping form of Darien in a big, overstuffed chair and hurried through the door. Souru went over to Jaina, who still lay on the birthing table, though in a more comfortable position. Jaina turned her brandy-brown gaze to him, full of love and pride. Souru sat down next to her in one of the tall durasteel chairs that were standard in hospitals. He pushed some of her matted hair out of her face and kissed her on the forehead. Jaina smiled and turned her gaze to the baby in her arms. The newborn girl had a curly fluff of brown hair, so dark it was almost black, and green eyes the color of emeralds. The girl gave her parents little squeak and a toothless grin. This made Souru chuckle.

"She's got your personality already," he remarked, reaching out to let the little girl attempt to grab his finger. Instead, she turned her attention to her mother.

"And your sarcasm!" Jaina said with a little laugh. Souru chuckled again.

"Guess you're right."

Jaina smiled at her new baby girl. "I think I know what to call her."

"Really? Tell me."

"Sutaru. It means 'star'," Jaina said.

"That's a pretty name... see? She even has the stars in her eyes, like her mother," Souru kissed Jaina on her cheek. "I love you, Jaina."

"I love you too, Souru. Forever."

Months went by in a flash, and soon little Sutaru was a crawler. She had a cute nickname, ChibiSuta - "Little Star" - and she really did have her mother's personality. She had taken a liking to her mother's astromech, R2-D7 - Ardee - and liked to try to imitate his beeps and warbles. This particular day was one of the frequent family reunions, where Sutaru's mother meets back up with her two brothers, her parents, aunt and uncle, and two cousins. Sutaru, of course, was her grandmother's center of attention, and even caught the eye of her great-uncle Luke Skywalker. Jaina's aunt Mara Jade Skywalker, since her victory against a mysterious disease, had produced Benjamin and Bebi, ages ten and six. One-year-old Darien had taken to following his uncle Anakin around, much to his amusement. The little boy's determination to walk like him kept him tripping over his security blanket, and the plastic toy lightsaber he carried helped none. Jacen sat on a couch with Lucas and Trowa, telling them some story or another.

Sutaru was crawling around on the carpeted floor, her short pigtails curled so they puffed out beside her ears. She wore a dark green sailor-type dress, matching bloomers, and a pair of little green booties for her still-sensitive feet. Every once in a while, she'd crawl over to her grandmother, Leia Organa Solo, and smile, forcing Leia to pick her up and give her a hug. She'd then insist on being put down and crawl over to her parents.

Jaina's father, Han, hugged his oldest. She was also the only one with children. "Jainy, your mom and I just wanted to say... I guess thanks." He flashed his patented roguish smile.

"Dad... you haven't called me that since I was seven!" Jaina returned his grin and gave him a little poke in the ribs.

Han rubbed the spot where she'd poked him. "Yeah, I know. But I just want you to know your mom and I love you, and I guess I'm glad we've got a couple grand-munchkins to carry holos of." He clapped Souru on the shoulder, smiling. "You're lucky, my boy. Lucky to have my daughter." Han winked. "But if I were you, I'd keep the toolkit away from the munchkins for a while. Jaina dismantled a replicator once, and it took months to fix!"

"Dad!!"

"Sorry!"

The room erupted in laughter as Sutaru sat in the middle of the floor pondering the meaning of the joke.

At age three, Sutaru's family grew again, with the addition of her sisters Neburaa and Nobaa. The twins were easy to spot in the nursery; they were the only ones with pink and purple hair, Neburaa purple and Nobaa pink. When these two came home, they added a few more laughs and a lot more fun to the family.

Sutaru was eighteen months old when she first showed signs of her developing affinity for the Force. The first came when she made a hydrospanner fall off a countertop in her mother's constantly-remodeled ship. The next came when she was three; she made Morgan think his hair was full of worms, followed by many washing-throughs. But, it was at age seven that Sutaru's parents found that Sutaru's powers lied not only with the Force, but within the planet Corellia itself. Jaina and Souru had to keep a secret from their daughter, one that could change her life if she knew prematurely.

Jaina took her daughter aside one day, near her twelfth birthday, and told her everything.

Sutaru pushed her curly hair back over her shoulders. "Momma, what's this all about?"

Jaina sighed. She's like me in every way, Jaina mused. "Sutaru, it's time you knew the full extent of your power."

"Power, what power? What in the name of the Five Brothers are you talking about?"

"Sutaru, calm down and listen to me, okay? Okay. Sutaru, before you and your brother and sisters were born, before I even met your father, I was a totally different person." Jaina pulled a silver compact from a pocket. "I was a Sailor Jedi Knight."

"A... what?!" Sure, Sutaru had heard plenty about the Sailor Jedi, but though she'd never heard of the Sailor Jedi Knights, she couldn't belive her MOTHER had been one!

Jaina nodded. "I was Sailor Yavin VI. Strange, I know, but that was what I got." Jaina ignored her daughter's strange look. "Here, I'll show you. Yavin VI Power, Make Up!"

Sutaru watched as her mother was surrounded by green, yellow, and blue lights. When the lights disappeared, Sailor Yavin VI stood in all her glory. Her uniform was similar to the Sailor Jedi's in most respects, but there were slight variants only a true Sailor Jedi Knight had. First of all, her hair had shortened to nearly Mercury-length. Beneath her bangs was a thin tiara with a blue star in the center. Her uniform was white, resembling the Sailor Star forms of the senshi. Her bib was blue, with a pale yellow stripe. Her bows were yellow, as were her elbow rolls. Her puffy sleeves were green with blue rolls. Her skirts were blue and green, the latter beneath the first. Two ribbons, one yellow, one green, led to her back bow, which had the green ribbons dangling to her knees. On top of her back bow was a transparent bow. Her boots were black Jedi boots. The most eye-catching feature of the uniform, by far, was the pair of real wings adorning her back.

Yavin VI rested a gloved hand on her daughter's shoulder and kneeled down in front of her. "Sutaru, my daughter, you have inherited my powers." Yavin VI reached into a slit in her top skirt, to a pocket she herself had sewn into it. She pulled out a gold heart-shaped brooch, with a green starburst on it. "This is your Henshin brooch. Say "Corellia Star Power, Make Up," and you'll transform!"

Sutaru took the brooch and immediately knew what to do. "Corellia Star Power, Make UP!"

Sutaru was surrounded by green stardust and orange light-beams. Her transformation was brief, and when the lights stopped, she stood before her mother, a whole new girl. She wore a variant of her mother's uniform, but hers resembled Saturn's more. Her hair had pushed itself into tear-drop odango, the curly ends sticking out off the sides. Under her bangs was a silver tiara with a green jewel. Her bib was green with a white stripe. Her shoulders were covered by the flower-shaped sleeves like Saturn's. Her bows were orange, her skirt and elbow rolls were green. Her orange, lace-up boots were the same as Saturn's, as well. She held a staff, like the Silence Glaive, yet with a sharp-edged durasteel starburst on the top.

Corellia squeaked. "My skirt is SHORT!"

Yavin VI giggled. "Don't worry, Corellia. It's better than full-armor suits and a lot more maneuverable."

Corellia's eyes filled with love and admiration for her mother. She dropped her staff and hugged Yavin VI. "Mom, this is the coolest!"

Yavin VI smiled sadly. "I know, but the coolness has to end here. Our planet, Corellia, is being attacked. "

"Huh?"

"Yes. The Sailor Sith somehow got here and are attacking. You must go to the past, for training by the original Sailor Jedi. This will get you there." Yavin VI handed Corellia a silver key, encrusted with jewels, on a chain. She then pulled a similar key from her pocket and yelled, "Time Gates, open to me! Guardian of Time, allow my daughter the training she needs, in a time safe from danger!"

Sutaru was suddenly at the Time Gate, detransformed, standing before a shadowy senshi in red and yellow. The senshi pushed open the gate and led Sutaru through.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

"Oof!"

Corellia landed on top of a woman with dark brown hair. "Gomen Nasai!"

Three girls introduced themselves as Nagareboshi, Zyta, and Kairiku, who introduced the brunette as Xarae. That's where the adventures began.
